What does a yellow sticker mean at TJ Maxx?
By Tag Hunter · Based on the Clearance Hunter Handbook · Updated 25 September 2026
A yellow sticker means final clearance. It is the last markdown, and the lowest price the item is meant to carry. If you want it, this is the moment to buy.
Yellow: final clearance
The item has reached the bottom of the markdown cycle and is not scheduled to get cheaper. Compare that with red, which is a checkpoint: a red-stickered item can still fall again. Yellow is where the falling stops.
Why yellow usually means buy now
Clearance at an off-price store is mostly single-unit inventory. There is no back stock of your size waiting to be brought out. When a yellow item in your size is gone, the chance is gone with it, not delayed.
Yellow items also don't sit forever. Unsold final-clearance stock eventually leaves the floor, either sold on to a third party or donated. Waiting for it to get cheaper is usually waiting for something that isn't coming.
The decision rule
If it's yellow, it fits, and you would have paid the red price for it, put it in the cart.
The last part matters. Buy the item, never the percentage: if you wouldn't want it at the shelf price with no comparison shown, a deep discount isn't a saving. A big cut on something you wouldn't have bought is still money spent.
Where and when yellow shows up
- Mostly in January and July. Those are the two deep-cut months, when the seasonal reset happens and yellow tickets appear across the store. See our clearance events guide.
- In every department. Yellow turns up on things like fragrance, bedding, luggage and kitchen items, not just the clearance racks at the back.
- Over days, not all at once. Stickers are changed by hand, department by department, so an event rolls out over several days.
- At the sister banners too. Marshalls and HomeGoods run the same events on their own timelines. Their tag systems aren't confirmed to match, so check your own store.
How to shop a yellow-sticker event
- Go in the morning. Tickets are changed overnight or before opening, so the floor is freshest first thing. By midday the good sizes are gone.
- Go more than once. Because the change is gradual, week one and week four are different stores.
- Walk every department, not only the clearance racks.
- Bring a list. Buy what's on it first. Then browse with whatever budget is left.
Two catches worth knowing
Yellow is meant to be final, but the big January and July clearance events can be an exception. And there is a red-sticker trap worth checking for before you trust a markdown. Both are covered in the handbook on pages 8 and 9, with anything we couldn't confirm labeled as such.
What is confirmed and what isn't
TJX has never published its internal tagging logic. Parts of what shoppers “know” come from former employees and viral videos, and some of it contradicts itself, so this guide labels anything that isn't solid. It's written for TJ Maxx stores in the United States.
Questions
What does a yellow sticker mean at TJ Maxx?
Yellow is the final markdown: the lowest price the item is intended to carry. The item is not scheduled to get cheaper, so if you want it, that is the moment to buy.
Is yellow the lowest price at TJ Maxx?
It is meant to be. Yellow is the last markdown in the cycle. TJX has never published its internal rules, though, so a few details come from staff accounts rather than official policy, and the handbook labels those.
What happens to yellow-sticker items that don't sell?
Unsold final-clearance stock eventually leaves the floor. It is moved on to a third party or donated, so a yellow item you leave behind may not be there next week.
When do yellow stickers appear at TJ Maxx?
They are concentrated in the big January and July clearance events, when the seasonal reset happens. They can turn up across the store, not only on the clearance racks at the back.
Should I buy a yellow-sticker item or wait?
If it is yellow, it fits, and you would have paid the red price for it, put it in the cart. Clearance at an off-price store is usually single-unit stock, so when your size is gone, it is gone.
Do yellow stickers work the same at Marshalls and HomeGoods?
Not confirmed. Marshalls and HomeGoods run the same January and July events on their own timelines, but their tag systems are not confirmed to match TJ Maxx's. Check your own store.
