When does TJ Maxx have clearance sales?
By Tag Hunter · Based on the Clearance Hunter Handbook · Updated 25 September 2026
TJ Maxx's deepest clearance comes in two events a year, January and July. Red-sticker markdowns happen all year round, but in those two months the whole system loosens at once, and yellow final-clearance tickets show up across the store.
January: the winter and holiday clear-out
Spring merchandise is on its way in, so cold-weather clothing and holiday decor have to go. Post-Christmas foot traffic is thin because everyone has just spent their money, which is exactly why the cuts are deepest. Of the two events, January is the one shoppers report going deeper.
July: the spring and summer reset
The mid-year version. Spring and summer inventory is cleared to make room for fall, and shoppers report it running from late July into mid-August. It is slightly shallower than January, but the aisles are far quieter, since most people aren't thinking about clearance in summer.
What to expect on the floor
- Yellow tickets across the store. They appear in many departments, not just the clearance racks at the back.
- A rollout, not a switch. Stickers are changed by hand over several days, so week one and week four of an event are different stores.
- Your local store's timing. The exact weeks vary, so watch your own store rather than trusting a date you read online.
Our yellow sticker guide covers what final clearance means and how to shop it, and the markdown schedule guide covers timing through the week.
The trap inside the good month
Deep discounts are the easiest way to spend more than you planned. A big cut on something you wouldn't have bought at any price is still money spent. Take a list, buy what's on it first, and only then browse with whatever budget is left.
Two catches worth knowing
Yellow is meant to be final, but the big January and July clearance events can be an exception. And there is a red-sticker trap worth checking for before you trust a markdown. Both are covered in the handbook on pages 8 and 9, and the handbook's month-by-month clearance calendar for the rest of the year is on page 17.
What is confirmed and what isn't
TJX has never published its internal markdown schedule or tagging logic, and doesn't publish event dates. The timing above comes from shopper reports and staff accounts, and stores differ, so treat it as a starting point for your own store. This guide is written for TJ Maxx stores in the United States. Marshalls and HomeGoods run the same events on their own timelines, and their tag systems are not confirmed to match.
