TJ Maxx markdown schedule: is there a markdown day?
By Tag Hunter · Based on the Clearance Hunter Handbook · Updated 25 September 2026
There is no national TJ Maxx markdown day. Markdown schedules are set store by store, so the day your store marks down may not be the day another one does. What you can rely on is a rhythm, and you can find your own store's pattern in about three weeks.
What about the Wednesday claim?
Almost every shopping blog names a specific day, and Wednesday morning is the most common answer: a new shipment is in and the weekend crowds haven't come through yet. Most of those posts are repeating each other.
A former member of a markdown team said reductions ran roughly once a week but not on a fixed day, and current employees describe the same thing. The work gets done when staffing allows.
What is actually consistent
- About one pass a week. Outside the big event months, a markdown pass roughly once a week is the normal rhythm.
- Done off the clock. Tickets are changed after close or before opening, so the floor is freshest first thing.
- Department by department. Different sections get marked at different times. Housewares may move while apparel hasn't.
Best time of day to shop at TJ Maxx
If you change one habit, change what time you walk in. New reductions go on overnight or in the hour before the doors open, and from opening until late morning you get full racks and complete size runs.
The reason it matters is that clearance at an off-price store is mostly single-unit stock. There is no back stock of your size. Arriving four hours later doesn't mean you pay more; it means the item was never available to you.
Short and often beats long and rare. About fifteen minutes across two departments, twice a week, catches more than a ninety-minute browse once a month. Frequency is what catches markdown day.
Best day of the week to shop
- Hunting selection? Go earlier in the week, right after a delivery lands. The best sizes and recognizable brands go first.
- Hunting price? Go later in the week, once the week's markdown pass has worked through the floor.
The two big events: January and July
Twice a year the whole system loosens at once.
- January is the winter and holiday clear-out. Shoppers report it going deeper than July.
- July is the spring and summer reset. Shoppers report it running from late July into mid-August, with far less competition in the aisles.
Stickers change by hand over several days, so week one and week four of an event are different stores. Go more than once, and go in the morning. Our clearance events guide covers what each one clears, and our yellow sticker guide covers what to do when you find final clearance.
How to find your store's day
You can't look it up, so you observe it. Watch one small section you care about, visit twice a week in the morning, and note when tickets change. Two visits a week for about three weeks is enough to see the pattern, and once you have it, it's yours: nobody else shopping that store has it.
Until you know it, default to weekday mornings. The handbook gives you the step-by-step method, the observation sheet (page 18), a month-by-month clearance calendar and a tracker log to keep it all in one place.
What is confirmed and what isn't
TJX has never published its internal markdown schedule or tagging logic. Parts of what shoppers “know” come from former employees and viral videos, and some of it contradicts itself, so any pattern you read, including the ones here, is a starting hypothesis for your store. This guide is written for TJ Maxx stores in the United States.
Questions
Is there a TJ Maxx markdown day?
No. There is no national markdown day. Markdown schedules are set store by store, so the way to find yours is to observe your own store for a few weeks.
Does TJ Maxx mark down on Wednesdays?
Wednesday morning is widely repeated online, but it isn't confirmed. Staff accounts in the handbook describe reductions about once a week with no fixed day, done when staffing allows. Treat Wednesday as a guess to test at your own store.
What is the best time to shop at TJ Maxx?
Weekday mornings. Tickets are reported to be changed after close or before opening, so from opening until late morning you get full racks and complete size runs. The best day depends on your store, so watch it for a few weeks.
What time of day does TJ Maxx mark down?
Tickets are reported to be changed after close or before opening, so the floor is freshest first thing in the morning. By midday the common sizes and recognizable brands are thinning out.
When are the biggest TJ Maxx markdowns?
January and July. January is the winter and holiday clear-out and is the one shoppers report going deeper. July is the spring and summer reset, reported to run from late July into mid-August.
Do Marshalls and HomeGoods mark down on the same schedule?
Not confirmed. Marshalls and HomeGoods run the same January and July events on their own timelines, and their tag systems are not confirmed to match TJ Maxx's. Check your own store.
How do I find my store's markdown day?
Watch a small section of your store. Two morning visits a week for about three weeks is enough to see when tickets change. The handbook has a step-by-step method and an observation sheet for it.
