What does “Compare At” mean at TJ Maxx?
By Tag Hunter · Based on the Clearance Hunter Handbook · Updated 25 September 2026
“Compare At” is a reference price, not a discount. It is the most persuasive number on the ticket and the least reliable, so it helps to know what it does and doesn't tell you.
What it claims to be
Compare At is a reference price for a comparable item: roughly what the retailer believes similar goods have sold for elsewhere. It is a comparison. It is not a record of what this specific item was ever priced at in a specific store.
Where it breaks
Shoppers who check find cases where the original brand is currently selling the item for less than the Compare At figure. The percentage on the shelf edge and the percentage in reality are different numbers.
It can cut both ways. Sometimes the ticket understates the deal. That is exactly why the Compare At figure should never be the thing that closes the sale for you.
The honest question
Would you buy this at the shelf price if the ticket showed no comparison at all?
If yes, the item is worth it whatever the ticket says. If no, the saving is doing the deciding, and that is how clearance costs you money. A saving you can't verify is not a saving. Buy the item, never the percentage.
The handbook goes further on page 10, with a worked example and a quick check you can do in the store.
Compare At versus the tag colors
Compare At says nothing about where the item is in the markdown cycle. The colors do. Our tag colors guide explains how to read the ticket and the sticker together.
What is confirmed and what isn't
Compare At is the retailer's own reference figure, and how it is chosen isn't published. What is described here is how the figure is meant to work and what shoppers who check report. This guide is written for TJ Maxx stores in the United States.
Questions
What does Compare At mean at TJ Maxx?
Compare At is a reference price for a comparable item, roughly what the retailer believes similar goods have sold for elsewhere. It is a comparison, not a discount.
Is the Compare At price the original price?
No. It is not a record of what this specific item was ever priced at in a specific store. It is a reference figure for comparable goods.
Is the Compare At price accurate?
Not reliably. Shoppers who check report cases where the original brand is currently selling the item for less than the Compare At figure. It can also go the other way and understate the deal.
How can I tell if a TJ Maxx deal is real?
Ask whether you would buy the item at the shelf price if the ticket showed no comparison at all. If not, the saving is doing the deciding. Buy the item, never the percentage.
Do the tag colors tell me more than Compare At?
For timing, yes. The ticket and sticker colors show where an item sits in the markdown cycle. Compare At only shows a reference figure.
